Coverage Figures | The Water Page

The DifficultiesDetermining the coverage figures for water supply and sanitation in the developing world is a difficult if not impossible task. There are an number of reasons for this. These are primarily:Generally coverage figures are over estimated.These difficulties are referred to in the World Health Organization Global Water Supply and Sanitation Assessment 2000 noted below.The Global Water Supply and Sanitation Assessment 2000The WHO and UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation (JMP) provides a snapshot of water supply and sanitation worldwide at the turn of the millennium using information available from different sources. From 2001 the JMP database – for both historic data and future projections – will be periodically updated. All assistance in identifying unused and new data to improve the estimates presented here is welcome.WHO Library Cataloguing-in-Publication DataWater supply – statisticsWater resources developmentSanitation – statisticsWHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation (ISBN 92 4 156202 1) (NLM classificatrion: WA 675)Report Contents (WHO Site)Global Coverage Figures REGION1990 Population (millions)2000 Population (millions)Total populationPopulation unservedTotal populationPopulation unserved% servedGLOBAL(76% of global population represented)(89% of global population represented)Urban water supply2 2922 179113952 8452 67217394Rural water supply2 9741 9611 013663 2102 28492671Total water supply5 2664 1401 126796 0554 9561 09982Urban sanitation2 2921 877415822 8452 44240386Rural sanitation2 9741 0281 946353 2101 2102 00038Total sanitation5 2662 9052 361556 0553 6522 40360REGION1990 Population (millions)2000 Population (millions)Total populationPopulation unservedTotal populationPopulation unserved% servedAFRICA(72% of regional population represented)(96% of regional population represented)Urban water supply19716631842972534485Rural water supply4181832354448723125647Total water supply6153492665778448430062Urban sanitation19716730852972514684Rural sanitation4182062124948722026745Total sanitation6153732426178447131360REGION1990 Population (millions)2000 Population (millions)Total populationPopulation unservedTotal populationPopulation unserved% servedASIA(88% of regional population represented)(94% of regional population represented)Urban water supply1 02997257941 3521 2549893Rural water supply2 1511 433718672 3311 73659575Total water supply3 1802 405775763 6832 99069381Urban sanitation1 029690339671 3521 05529778Rural sanitation2 1514961 655232 3317121 61931Total sanitation3 1801 1861 994373 6831 7671 91648REGION1990 Population (millions)2000 Population (millions)Total populationPopulation unservedTotal populationPopulation unserved% served(99% of regional population represented)Urban water supply31328726923913622993Rural water supply128725656128794962Total water supply44135982825194417885Urban sanitation31326746853913405187Rural sanitation128507839128626649Total sanitation4413171247251940211778REGION1990 Population (millions)2000 Population (millions)Total populationPopulation unservedTotal populationPopulation unserved% servedOCEANIA(64% of regional population represented)(85% of regional population represented)Urban water supply181801002121098Rural water supply8536296363Total water supply26233883027388Urban sanitation18180992121099Rural sanitation8718997281Total sanitation26251963028293REGION1990 Population (millions)2000 Population (millions)Total populationPopulation unservedTotal populationPopulation unserved% servedEUROPE(15% of regional population represented)(44% of regional population represented)Urban water supply52252201005455423100Rural water supply20019911001841612387Total water supply72272111007297032696Urban sanitation5225220100545537899Rural sanitation20019911001841374774Total sanitation72272111007296745592REGION1990 Population (millions)2000 Population (millions)Total populationPopulation unservedTotal populationPopulation unserved% servedNORTHERN AMERICA(99.9% of regional population represented)(99.9% of regional population represented)Urban water supply21321301002392390100Rural water supply6969010071710100Total water supply28228201003103100100Urban sanitation21321301002392390100Rural sanitation6969010071710100Total sanitation28228201003103100100
